My flat racing season 2015

This blog is intended to sum up my flat racing season April-October 2015, both as a punter and a fan of racing.

So how have I done on the betting front?
Well, suppose, for ease of understanding, I have bet the sum of £1000.
My return from the bookies has been £1251.
Yes, I have made a clear profit of 25.1% and am therefore quite a happy punter.
As my GP said to me, ‘It’s a damn sight better than an ISA.’

How many winners have I had?
I have had 37 winners, notably….
Dubai Dynamo 3 times (7-1,5-1,17-2)
Trip To Paris 2 times (10-1 Chester Cup,10-1 Ascot Gold Cup)
Snow Sky 2 times (5-2,14-1 Hardwicke Stakes)

How many race meetings have I attended?
I have attended 16 meetings.
Redcar (4), York (4), Catterick (3), Thirsk (3), Ripon (2)

Terrific races seen live….

Juddmonte International (Group 1) at York…..How did Golden Horn manage to lose to Arabian Queen?….Stunned silence in the huge crowd.
Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1) at York….Michael Dods’ Mecca’s Angel picking off Acapulco to win by 3 lengths….Stunning speedster.
Dante Stakes (Group 2) at York….Golden Horn beating Jack Hobbs….for me, York’s best day out by far.
AND the great Yorkshire Handicaps….Thirsk Hunt Cup, Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar, Great St Wilfrid at Ripon and, of course, the Catterick Dash.
Note….this year I failed to pick the winner of any of these fun races!
AND I must mention Tullius snatching the York Stakes (Group 2) on the line from painted pony Top Notch Tonto.

My season started very well on Day 1, with Gabrial winning the Lincoln at 12-1. And then there was good old Captain Dunne at Thirsk, ridden by Rachel Richardson with her 7 lbs allowance. She shot out of the gate into a 2 length lead and continued to look back for the next 5 furlongs to see if anything might get to her. Nothing did and the old boy won at 22-1. He still enjoys his races!

As well as going racing, I watch on the box most weekends and follow the big festivals. Royal Ascot was a big success whereas I managed to lose money throughout the York Ebor Festival. Still, although I’ll never make a living through betting, a 25% profit isn’t bad.

Finally, I love the spectacle and the sport. To see Limato, blocked in, going sideways for a gap, change gear to get level, and then change gear again to win by 3 lengths in the Park Stakes, brings tears of emotion to my eyes.

Thanks for reading.

And what next?
Silviniaco Conti, Coneygree, Many Clouds, Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Willie Mullins, etc. Watching the jumpers, going to Catterick and Cheltenham, remembering Denman, betting in a more relaxed way, and probably losing a little money. Cheers!

Nanton, my favourite horse over the last 10 years, now retired at New Beginnings, who
won over £300000, won the Zetland Gold Cup and was placed at Group 2,3 level.
Thanks for all the fun you gave me.
Enjoy retirement!
